Built to Be Tested: Your Aircraft, Part by Part

The parts of the aircraft that look most alarming from a window seat are usually the ones that have been tested hardest. Here's what you're actually sitting in.

The wings are meant to move

A wing that flexes is a wing doing its job. In certification testing, wings are bent upwards far beyond anything the atmosphere can produce before they are allowed to carry passengers.

So when you see the wingtip rise and settle in turbulence, you are watching engineering working exactly as designed — not straining.

Engines: tested to extremes

Engines are run through ingesting water and hail, blade-loss tests, and thousands of hours of endurance running before entering service. In flight they are monitored continuously, parameter by parameter.

And the aircraft is certified to fly, climb and land safely on one engine. We train that scenario every few months in the simulator — it is routine to us.

Landing gear, brakes and tyres

Gear is designed and tested for landings far firmer than any you'll experience. Tyres run at very high pressure and are inspected and changed on a strict schedule.

A firm landing in rain or a short runway is deliberate: touching down positively cuts through water and gets the wheels braking sooner. It's technique, not trouble.

Pressurisation and the cabin

The fuselage is a pressure vessel, tested through tens of thousands of pressurisation cycles — often in a water tank — to prove its life long before it flies.

The air you breathe is refreshed every few minutes and passed through hospital-grade filters. That rush of air at the gate, and the change in tone as we climb, is the system doing precisely what it should.

Maintenance never really stops

Checks before every flight, deeper inspections on a fixed hourly and calendar schedule, and periodic heavy maintenance where the aircraft is largely taken apart and examined.

Every component with a life limit is tracked individually. If anything is outside limits, the aircraft simply doesn't fly.
